Don’t Just Do Something, Stand There!

I would guess that most of us were told growing up, “Don’t just stand there, do something!” Compare this statement to the headline and note the difference. Both statements use the same words, but because they’re in a different order, it makes the meaning the complete opposite.

It is helpful to understand both of these sayings as they pertain to your business and your life. There are many times where we end up thinking that “busy-ness” and “business” are the same. Have you ever shown up at work in the morning and by the end of the day, you’re exhausted but can’t point to anything of significance that you accomplished? This might be a sign that you are too busy being busy. Every day, successful people have a goal, or goals for that day. Hopefully, one of your goals for the day is to have a personal encounter with yourself. Did you know that taking a five-minute break about every hour might be the best thing for you? It is proven to:

  1. Lower stress
  2. Reduce on the job accidents
  3. Increase concentration
  4. Improve work speed
  5. Assist in weight loss

I meet with business owners that tend to wear many hats. The smaller the business, the more hats they wear, and the more hats they wear, the less likely they are to think about taking a break. “The more breaks I take, the farther behind I will fall,” they think to themselves. But the facts prove otherwise. Studies have proven that after 50 to 60 minutes of continuous work, performance starts to deteriorate. So take a stretch break to maximize the time that you are stopping work.

Another angle on this idea of “don’t just do something, stand there” has to do with stopping long enough to look at your business. Look at the four aspects of your business and grade each one:

  1. You
  2. Your team
  3. Your client
  4. Your partners.

Each of these are vital for your success. Make sure that you are able to look at each one in detail and be honest with yourself on these. Do yourself a favor and do not grade on a curve. Give the grade that each one deserves. If you need help with this, I have a free list of questions that you can ask regarding these aspects. Do yourself a favor and take a moment right now and get up and move around, stretch and don’t think about work and don’t just do something, stand there! You and those around you will be glad that you did.
